What is Cooke's Crew?

COOKE’S CREW is our FREE short course for young people aged 11 – 15 years-old. Participants get to learn and try different filmmaking, digital and creative skills as they work towards a final project in a safe and supported environment led by professional artists and filmmakers. To give you an idea of what you could make, see our previous projects below!

Join us for our next FREE Cooke’s Crew short filmmaking course on Fridays throughout August! Led by professional Director & Scriptwriter Karen Bird, young people will learn filmmaking skills in a series of workshops before making their own short film!

No previous experience is needed!

Workshops will start at Signal Film and Media, Cooke’s Studios, 102-104 Abbey Road, Barrow in Furness but we will be going out on location as part of this course so please be prepared to bring wet weather clothing and sensible footwear! Please bring a packed lunch and water bottle, snacks will be provided.

COOKE’S CREW 2022 took place in two blocks of activity. The theme was ‘Outside’ – so our brilliant young creatives got ready to go out on location and explore our outdoor spaces around Barrow & South Lakeland!
 
Our first cohort started on 1st June with Giuseppe and Matthew from Northern production company Film on the Brain where students made a fantastic short film called “Where’s Loki?” filmed around Barrow Park.
 
Cooke’s Crew returned for a 2nd block on 21st July with digital artist Dr Michaela French where a new cohort explored & developed new artwork based around the climate changes happening in Grizedale Forest.

WORKSHOPS TAKE PLACE in or FROM COOKE’S STUDIO’S, 102-104 ABBEY RD.

  • A legal adult or guardian will need to fill in the application form
  • All staff have enhanced-level DBS checks & have completed thorough safeguarding training
  • Workshops are expected to go outside on location in 2022 so please understand be prepared to wear sensible outdoor clothing

Cooke’s Crew has been running for over 7 years now and is entirely free, aimed at young residents of the Barrow particularly in the wards of Ormsgill, Walney South, Hindpool, Central, Barrow Island & Risedale.

Although young people inherently learn digital skills through using social media, computer games and access at school, in areas of social deprivation this does not translate to acquiring the variety of essential skills and knowledge about how to use technology productively – to improve life chances and to access job opportunities.
