The Past Is Watching, Let's Look Back
Free Workshop with Dawn Parsonage
Friday 11th July | 1-3pm
2025
Join us with Dawn Parsonage for a hands-on creative session exploring the quiet power of the gaze in Victorian and Edwardian photography!
Working with images from Dawn Parsonage’s recent project, The Workers and images from the Sankey Collection, we look at the striking presence of eye contact in Victorian and Edwardian portraiture. How this can connect us to the past, and simultaneously allow us to feel seen. We will explore this power through creating a collage of faces from the past and today – a sea of faces all looking directly at us. Does this work intensify the feeling? Does it feel unnerving? Comedic? Beautiful? How does it make us feel?
Dawn will also show examples of photographic collages through photographic history via Victorian scrapbooks and Edwardian postcards which went one to feed into popular culture in the form of the Beatles, Sargent Peppers Album artwork and beyond.
At the end of the session, our collaborative collage will become an artwork in its own right — with the potential to be displayed at Signal Film & Media!
