This summer, enjoy a series of photography projects as part of Sankey: Lives Through the Lens. Unfolding across multiple public locations in Barrow-in-Furness, the photographs capture Barrow through a new lens, celebrating its people, bodies of water, and its working spirit. Discover two new photography series: The Binding Tide outdoor exhibition by photographer Nicholas J.R. White and The Workers, by Dawn Parsonage.

The Binding Tide is an outdoor photography exhibition inspired by water and the Sankey Photography Archive. Celebrating the connection between the people of Barrow and its coastline.

His series of photographs explores the margins of Barrow, tracing the coast road from Ulverston to Roa Island; North to South Walney and the fringes of Barrow Island and celebrates the people he met during his time here. 

“I wasn’t looking to replicate photographs from the archive,” shared Nicholas, “rather craft a contemporary response to conversations started by the Sankey’s.” 

Aware of how the town has been portrayed in the past, Nicholas was keen to steer his work towards that of quiet beauty. Nicholas’s photos continue the admirable story of Sankey by building on mutual interactions with natural spaces, belonging, placemaking and community.
