New Project Launch ‘Window on Walney’

May sees the launch of a new digital access project for Walney funded by the Health Lottery. Window on Walney is Signal Film and Media’s new year-long project that will engage Walney residents in coming together to share and celebrate stories told, stories remembered and stories imagined. We are interested in tall tales and legends from right across the island.

Window on Walney will provide the opportunity for older residents and school children to get trained up in creative digital skills and make new connections through their story-telling, recording and film making. Students from Walney School and South Walney Juniors will be working in school and later joining local older residents in workshops facilitated by professional digital media practitioners.

Events for local older residents kick off with the first in a series of three community film shows and tea parties. This will take place at 2-4pm in Walney Community Centre on Thursday 26 June 2014, and promises to be a lively and fun event and will include a screening of Signal’s award winning short documentary, The German Who Came to Tea, made as part of a Heritage Lottery funded project which shares the story of local resident Annie Day who at 100 years old recalls how 70 years ago, her young son brought a German prisoner of war home for Christmas dinner – marking the start of an enduring lesson in love, loss and acceptance.

Window on Walney aims to overcome isolation of older people, and build self-confidence across the community through teaching new creative skills. It will promote good relations between the generations, enabling both young and old to collaborate in telling their stories with pride. Above all Window on Walney will be a contemporary celebration of life on Walney Island – past and present.
