Normal

A short film scripted by a team of people supported by Barrow-based mental health support organisation The Croftlands Trust was filmed over three days earlier this month.

Participants took up lead roles performing in the 7-minute short alongside professional actress Erin Shanagher, who took time out from filming a major role in a new drama for Sky Atlantic scripted by Paul Abbott (creator of Shameless) to play alongside the group.

Erin passed on acting tips whilst others from the group took up roles as camera operator, director and production designer with support from filmmaker mentors.

Provisionally titled ‘Normal’, the film is being made as part of the Big Lottery-funded Reaching Communities project.

Lyn Young from Croftlands said that the project has made a fantastic impression on the group and we are looking forward to seeing the results of all their hard work when the film is edited in the coming weeks.

Screening – This challenging film about mental health, made by clients of Croftlands trust was screened to over 60 people.

The group have been working since April 2011 on the short film ‘Normal’ which they have written, shot and edited themselves throughout the course of the year.

The evening was a great success with a packed out audience including special guest Chris Graham – the founding director of Croftlands Trust – who gave a talk on the history of the charity which works with adults with mental health problems.

The short film ‘Normal’ challenges preconceptions of mental health and poses a question “What is normal anyway?”.

At Signal we’ve had great fun working with everyone throughout the year and are looking forward to lots of the filmmakers coming back on board our Heritage digital arts project in the new year.
