This was Signal’s  4th year running the BFI Film Academy in Barrow-in-Furness. We’ve delivered a 10-week long intense filmmaking course to 18 young people aged 16-19. Most participants came from Barrow and it’s surrounding areas, but some participants joined us from as far away as Preston and Lancaster.

Ravenscroft High stars Ciara Baxendale (E4, My Big Fat Diary) and rising star Charlotte Dowson (Ordinary Lies). TV director Eddy Marshall (Holby City, Hollyoaks) came along as one of our fantastic Industry mentors.

Film Made – Autumn Veil, 8mins

This was Signal’s  3rd year running the BFI Film Academy in Barrow-in-Furness. We’ve delivered a 10-week long intense filmmaking course to 17 young people aged 16-19. Most participants came from Barrow and it’s surrounding areas, but some participants joined us from as far away as Preston and Lancaster.

This tender short film, ‘Autumn Veil’ is a coming of age story about a troubled teenager whose chance encounter with a kind stranger marks a turning point in his life. The film stars Niek Versteeg, rising young star of teen TV series Wolfblood. It also stars Alfred Hoffman as Hobie, who’s successful career in film and TV includes feature film ‘Caregiver’.

One of our trainees went on to gain a place at the extremely competitive BFI Talent Campus, a residential filmmaking programme working with top industry professionals at the National Film and Television School. Another participant went onto a VFX course through the BFI in Amersham.

Film Made – Driven, 6mins

18 budding young filmmakers were mentored by Industry professionals through a programme of filmmaking and film education events from October 2013 through to March 2014. The project culminated with the group writing, crewing and editing a short pyschological thriller film during October half term. The film was premiered at a special showcase & BFI Career surgery event at FACT and screened locally alongside Stanley Kubrick’s classic horror, The Shining, at Cooke’s Studios, Barrow-in-Furness.

12 of our participants gained Silver Arts Award, 1 gained Bronze.

2 of our trainees went on to gain places at the extremely competitive BFI Talent Campus, a residential filmmaking programme working with top industry professionals at the National Film and Television School.

Film Made – Noted, 6mins

9 young people at Signal worked with Industry professionals through a programme of filmmaking and film education events and workshops on Saturdays throughout January and February. The project culminated with the group writing, crewing and editing a short film during February half term, followed by programming a feature film to screen alongside their short in a celebration event at Cooke’s Studios.

8 of our participants gained Silver Arts Award.
