Creative writing workshop

Join a free 6 – week creative writing programme with the writer Kate Davis. The sessions will take place each week on Thursday evenings from 25th January to 1st March 2018 from 6 – 8pm.

The workshops will draw on the material collected in the beginning half of the Market Tales Project, including film, photography, sound and objects. Over the 6-weeks, participants will use exercises to build confidence and writing skills. The writing and stories created across the 6-weeks will contribute towards a live theatre piece which will be developed and performed by The Ashton Theatre Group in Easter 2018.

Kate Davis who is running the workshop is a writer from Barrow-in-Furness with a particular interest in poetry and in the landscape and geology of the Furness Peninsula. She has taught creative writing for 20 years working in a huge range of settings; with community groups, in schools across the north of England, for the Ashton Group Theatre Company, the Whitworth Art Gallery and Heron Corn Mill. Her poems have been published in Iota and Muse, broadcast on BBC radio and printed on shopping bags, while her stories have been installed in street furniture, in the primates section of Manchester Museum’s natural history display and at Art Gene. She gained an MA Poetry from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2011 and in 2013 was awarded a Northern Writers Award. Her collection of poetry will be published in June 2018 by Penned in the Margins.

The workshops will focus on Barrow Market although anyone interested in learning more about writing is welcome. To apply, fill in the form below or you can contact Julia or Kezz by calling 01229 838592 or by popping into Signal’s offices at Cooke’s Studios, 104 Abbey Road.
