Prospect Road / Hollow Lane Land Mine

Martin Bates

The Sankey image is taken from Newbarns village, near the junction of Fairfield Lane and Hollow Lane. The Farmers Arms is seen just beyond Todd’s grocery shop. The image dates from the 1930s, before houses were built on Hollow Lane beyond the terraced houses – and behind them in Prospect Road.

On 3rd – 4th May two landmines landed in the neighbourhood, causing extensive damage to the area. One landed near the bottom of Prospect Road causing the deaths of:

  • Richard Bant (52), Firewatcher, died at 41 Prospect Road
  • Mary Sarah Long (80), lived at 30 Prospect Road, died at 47 Prospect Road
  • William Waters (45) died at 47 Prospect Road
  • George Wilson Carradus (40) lived at 3 Summit Avenue,  died at 74 Hollow Lane
  • Catherine Pratt (84) died at 76 Hollow Lane
  • Albert Stace (59) died at 5 Orchard Avenue

As a result of the explosion, many houses were destroyed or pulled down – including Todd’s grocery shop at Nos 18 and 20 Newbarns Village, but some were re-built – including two of the terraced houses in the picture.

The large extent of the blast damage from this landmine is illustrated by Ron Marsh of 14 Hector Street, saying “our front door was blown right up the stairs and ended up in the back bedroom”. (1)

The Marsh family had relocated to Newbarns after they had been bombed out of their home in Vernon Street on 14th April; initially living in the front room at Hector Street, at the invitation of Mr and Mrs Walmsley.
