Chetwynde School - In The Footsteps of Killip with Joseph Doubtfire-Jun-25
Joseph Doubtfire with pupils from Chetwynde School

In the summer of 2025, Joseph Doubtfire and Signal explored the work of Chris Killip through a series of creative workshops with pupils from Chetwynde School. The young people were immersed in different communities around Barrow including Askam, Roa Island, Hindpool and Roose and thought about how Killip selected subjects, composed and captured his photographs.

The young people used cameras with film and limited shots as Killip would have. This required them to think about the images they were taking through framing and setting up of composition. They also used digital cameras and took images of people, of views and of objects and selected their favourite images from contact sheets.

The work produced is a testament to their creativity, time and observations within the communities they live in and care about.

See the work on display in our Welcome Space. The video produced by Joseph Doubtfire can also be viewed below.
