Cumbrian Focus brings together six leading artists for a new look at the physical and social terrain of the region. The projects on show offer far-reaching reflections on time and shifts taking place in the landscape, coupled with closer looks at the everyday ways people navigate the West Coast: from strange forms of tourism in unexpected places, to the simple day-to-day activities of dog walking.
About Vanessa Winship
Regarded as one of Britain’s most acclaimed documentary photographers, in 2011 Vanessa Winship was recipient of the prestigious Henri Cartier Bresson foundation (HCB) award. Her first mid-career survey was held at Fundacion Mapfre in Madrid in 2014, followed by a major solo show at the Barbican Art gallery in 2018. She is author and subject of several monographs including the acclaimed books Sweet Nothings and She Dances on Jackson. In 2019 Tate Britain acquired a collection of her work.
About Phoebe Kiely
Phoebe Kiely’s distinctive images are printed in the traditional way, using analogue photography developed by hand in a darkroom. She was 2016’s Portrait of Britain winner and has been featured in the British Journal of Photography’s “Ones to Watch”. She was also listed in The Guardian’s “Next Generation Photographers – Hottest New Talent”. Her photography focuses on every aspect of the process & is strongly influenced by chiaroscuro – the use of strong contrasts between light & dark.
