Walney Bridge

Circa 1910

written by Peter Laird

Opened in 1908, Walney Bridge was originally a toll bridge that people had to pay to cross. Down the middle you can see the poles for holding the tramwires, but there are no wires in place. This puts the date this image was taken as sometime between 30 July 1908 and June 1909, when the tram system reached the Promenade. It wouldn’t reach Biggar Bank, on the far side of Walney Island, until August 1911. The tram lines are already set into the surface.
