Sankey Photo in Focus 2

Play introduction

We are thrilled to welcome you to our second Photo in Focus exhibition, part of the recently digitised Sankey Family Photographic Collection. The Sankeys were a father and son team who photographed Barrow and the wider Cumbria and Lancashire area from 1895 – 1965.

Local volunteers have researched the photographs and curated this exhibition to give you a chance to enjoy the rich history and stories behind these photographs, some of which haven’t been seen for over a hundred years.

Within the gallery, simply scroll to navigate and click any photograph to find out the fascinating story behind it.

For the best experience we recommend a desktop computer.

Who were the Sankeys?

From 1895 to 1965, father and son team Edward and Raymond Sankey photographed Barrow-in-Furness and the wider area of Cumbria and Lancashire.

The 15,000 images they took captured day-to-day life and some of the momentous events that shaped the town and over its remarkable period of development.

A really nice collection. I’m very please to see it and thank all those who created it.
Me? born in Barrow, but have lived in Canada for 41 years. So a little bit of memory lane, certainly. Thanks
